The first TV in the neighbourhood.

The first TV.

Nobody in the neighbourhood had yet bought a TV.
We had absolutely no clue as to what it actually was.
We had been hearing about it on the radio but had not
yet even seen one and I was too young to understand what this thing called a TV was.

The kids used to play in backyards or front yards or in the park until suppertime everyday and the grown ups would sit on the porch and chat or sit inside and listen to the stories on the radio.

One day, the family, a couple of house down from us was all quiet. The kids were not out on the street playing and the parents were nowhere to be seen. The rest of us kids thought maybe they had moved out or that someone in the house must be seriously ill.

We decided to go and find out what the story was because we were missing our friends.
The oldest of the group of us that went, and there must have been about twenty of us, knocked on the door and when the granny answered she invited all of us to see the television that they had bought.

This was amazing. Moving pictures right in your living room and with sound too.
Of course all of those early TVs were black and white.

So everyday after that we would all gather at their house and watch whatever was on.
They even moved the tv so that those who couldn’t get in could still see what was going on.

Then all of our parents started going over to the Castle’s house to see what all the fuss was about, because it was all us kids were talking about.

Eventually my dad was persuaded to get one too and before you knew just about everyone in the neighbourhood had one.
The show I remember most was “Dallas”. This one was on at six. So we would hurry to get bathed and have dinner and then plonk down in front of the television and watch the goings on on the ranch in Texas.

There were so many others over the years and a lot of them were good, it’s a pity they don’t repeat some of them today for our children to watch. Today there is just such a lot of rubbish on and you have to be so careful what the kids are exposed to.

Back then, as I said earlier, all the TVs were black and white and the stores where selling a colour screen to hang in front of the TV to make it look like it had colour.
My dad was never satisfied until we got our first colour TV.
The colour had to be perfect so he spent a lot of time adjusting the colour and moving the aerial around until it was just right.

It was a sad day, though, when they shut down our favourite radio station. We used to listen to stories on the radio, even though we had the TV. The station shut down because it lost 90% of its audience.

We were left with just the TV for entertainment.
I still miss those radio shows and no other station has attempted to put stories on since the advent of TV.
