Buying a puppy.

Buying a puppy.

When I was five years old we bought a puppy.
It was a Saturday afternoon and we went to fetch my mom at work.

We arrived there early and sat outside in the car to wait.
I man came past with four puppies in his arms and a Maltese poodle on a leash.
I begged my dad to buy one of them for us and eventually he relented and asked the man
how much he wanted for the puppies.

Dad did not have enough so I ran to my mom, in the clothing store where she was working, and asked her for the balance.

The transaction was completed and the man handed the puppy over to me.
She was so beautiful, and as white as snow.
I couldn’t wait to get her home and start playing with her.
I don’t know what breed of dog she was. She did look a little like the Fox Terriers, but I think she must have been mixed.

We decided to name her Tracy, after a character in a radio show.
Tracy grew to become my very best friend.
She was the most faithful and loyal dog I ever came across.

We had a nanny that looked after us and she left Tracy outside when she left for the day.
When we arrived home, the first thing I did was go looking for the puppy. I couldn’t find her anywhere and I began to worry.
Mom went out to the backyard and found little Tracy in the drain.
Fortunately she did not go too far down and was stuck quite near the top.
We got her out and gave her a bath.

When I was sick she wouldn’t leave my bedside and if anyone made as if to hit me she would go for them. Truly the best friend a little girl ever had.
I used to dress her in baby clothes and push her around in the pram.
My mom taught her to make a sort of grin and she used to do that just for my mother.

As I said, she was snow white, but in the summer months her coat would go a light shade of tan, especially when she had spent the whole day outside in the sun.

Unfortunately Tracy went blind and we had to put her down.
I was at school the day they came and took her away.
After school, when I arrived at home, the house had an empty, dead feeling to it. My best friend of many years was no more. We had played together, when I came home from school she was always sitting at the gate waiting for me. Now after so many years she was gone and I could not tell you how much I missed her and what a huge impact she had made on my life.
I have had other dogs since then, but none can compare to that little white dog that I loved so much.
